Early-stage graduate researchers
Raising the validity and possibility of non-academic career options early means that PhDs can be undertaken with multiple eventualities in mind. Focused on understanding and exploring non-academic post-PhD options, these workshops will give a sense of relevant skills development opportunities and guidance on how to decide next steps.
A day in the life of a non-academic employee
We describe myths some outsideacademia hold about people with PhDs as well as myths that some within academia hold about working in other sectors. We bust the myths and provide advice for what to do when coming across them in the real world.
Planning for careers beyond academia
Plenty of skills developed during the PhD are relevant for success in multiple roles and sectors beyond academia. We discuss non-academic career options and how to identity, develop and talk about skills as well as how to find and ‘decode’ job ads.
Mid-stage graduate researchers
Building blocks for a successful post-PhD move beyond academia, centred on concrete actions that can be taken in the remaining candidature period.
Building evidence for a career beyond academia
A personal skills audit and crafting a personal skills development plan are critical. In this workshop, learn how to identify, pursue and create development opportunities and build a portfolio of evidence of skills and experience.
What a PhD teaches about leadership
An examination of leadership and the opportunities provided by a PhD program to begin developing a personal approach to leadership, suitable whether considering academic or non-academic career paths.
Working with your supervisor to prepare for a career beyond academia
Many PhD supervisors will have limited experience of careers beyond academia, and some may even have reservations about their graduate researchers pursuing non-academic careers. We offer a framework for how to approach this conversation with supervisors, and co-design candidature to support a move beyond academia.

How to prepare your materials and apply for non-academic jobs
A comprehensive guide to preparing non-academic job application materials, this workshop is a chance to step through the process of crafting a ‘base’ version of an impactful industry resume, a modular framework for the crafting of cover letters, and how to ‘wow’ a non-academic panel at interview. Includes how to tailor resumes for specific roles based on an anonymised CV you provide and considers the kinds of information to include and the type of language to use.
Supervisors
Supporting non-academic careers is easier than you think!
In this workshop, we discuss why it’s important for PhD supervisors to explicitly discuss non-academic careers with their graduate researchers. We provide an easy script for how to incorporate this discussion into their supervisory meetings.
